HP LaserJet Series Printers - Print Jobs Hang in the Print Queue and Reprint When the PC Is Rebooted
ISSUE:
When printing to the HP LaserJet series printer over a network, jobs print successfully, and the print queue shows "Status - Printed,"but the jobs do not clear the queue. If the computer is rebooted, the job will print again. This typically occurs when using the printing system from the CD-ROM.
WORKAROUND:
There are three different workarounds available to solve this issue. Follow each workaround, in the order provided, as necessary to correct this issue.
Disable bidirectional support in the printer driver
Disabling bidirectional printing results in the print spooler being unable to use any language monitor. A conflict in the printing system language monitor can cause jobs to hang in the print queue. Follow the steps below for the applicable operating system.
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, 2000 and XP
From the Windows desktop, select Start, Settings, then Printers.

NOTE: In Windows XP, select Printers and Faxes.
Right-click the HP LaserJet driver icon and then click Properties.
Select the Portstab.
Remove the check from the box next to Enable Bidirectional Support.
Click Apply(if applicable).
Click OKto exit the driver properties.
Microsoft Windows 95, 98, and Me
From the Windows desktop, select Start, Settings, and then Printers.
Right-click the HP LaserJetdriver icon, and then click Properties.
Select the Detailstab.
Click Spool Settings.
Select Disable Bidirectional support for this printer, and click OK.
Click Apply(if applicable).
Click OKto exit the driver properties.
Download the HP Install Network Printer Wizard from the following URL
If disabling bidirectional support does not solve the issue, download and install the HP Install Network Printer Wizard.
Click here to download the HP Install Network Printer Wizard from www.hp.com.
After downloading the HP Install Network Printer Wizard, a dialog box will appear that states the download is complete.
Click Opento expand the file and start the install program
When the installation dialog box displays the message This version of the HP Install Network Printer Wizard is older than the one currently installed on your system. Are you sure you want to replace the existing (newer) version with this older version?, click OK. This will overwrite the current network port installed by the HP LaserJet printing system with a standard port.
After the HP Install Network Printer Wizard completes the installation, reboot the computer.
After successful reboot of the computer, run the HP Install Network Printer Wizard by selecting Start, Programsthen HP Install Network Printer Wizard.
After the HP Install Network Printer Wizard starts select Searchfrom the list of available printers, and click Next.
The Wizard will search for all available printers on the network. Select the appropriate HP LaserJet printer from the list and click Next.

NOTE: If there are more than one instance of the same HP LaserJet printer in the list, select the printer by its IP or hardware address. The IP and hardware address information can be found on the Jetdirect Configuration page.
NOTE: If the printer does not show up in the list of available printers, verify that the printer is properly configured and connected to the network.
The Wizard will analyze the printer and recommend a protocol for use with the printer. Click Nextto use the recommended protocol.
Select Show only currently installed drivers, and select the existing HP LaserJet printer driver from the list. Click Next.
Choose an option for printer sharing and click Next.
Click Finish
Select Start, Settings, then Printersfrom the Windows desktop.
Right-click the new driver icon and select Set as Default(if desired)
Delete the old driver icon.
Close the Printers window.
Download a PCL6 driver compatible with the HP LaserJet series printer from www.hp.com
Download and install a compatible HP LaserJet PCL6 driver from www.hp.com. Once the compatible HP LaserJet PCL6 driver is installed, disable bidirectional support for that driver before printing.
Install an alternate Microsoft driver
Install an alternate driver provided by Windows. Alternate drivers compatible with the HP LaserJet printer, such as the HP LaserJet 4 Plus are available in the Add Printer Wizard. To access the Add Printer Wizard, select Start, Settings, then Printersfrom the Windows desktop. The Add Printer Wizard icon is available in the Printers folder. Double-click the Add Printer Wizardicon to install an alternate driver.
